  • Energy Air Preconstruction Efforts Help Catch “Oops” in Mechanical Design for St. Pete Church

    Energy Air

Energy Air was contracted by Suncoast Team Services/Strick Development Company last August to complete the HVAC scope of work for the relocation of BridgePoint Church in St. Petersburg, Fla., which includes renovating a former 42,060-square-foot Lifestyle Family Fitness space to become BridgePoint Church’s new hub campus.

During preconstruction, Ryan Shoemaker, the Energy Air mechanical designer working on the project, discovered the design was lacking the tonnage necessary to provide sufficient cooling for the church. After completing a detailed analysis, it was determined the space needed 185 tons of cooling, a 43-ton increase over the 142 called for in the original design.

After receiving direction from the Owner and Architect, we proceeded with a re-design and completed plans for permitting in roughly two weeks. Through the redesign process, we were able to stay within the owner’s original budget and keep the project schedule on track.

This is not an uncommon occurrence, according to Dave Bridenbaugh, Energy Air vice president, who oversees preconstruction efforts.

“We attempt to review construction documents for constructability and best value practices on every job,” he said. “In this case, Ryan was fortunately able to catch that we had a capacity shortage so that we could make the necessary corrections to the design.”

As is typical with renovation projects, our team has met and overcome many challenges during construction, but we are expected to be complete in the end of April, and church services are expected to begin in early May.

Check out the kudos received from Suncoast Team Services’ Project Managers for both Ryan and Energy Air Senior Foreman, Fred Harman.

“Thank you for putting Fred on this project.  He is a patient man and a great guy to work with, not to mention that he obviously knows his stuff about HVAC.” Thanks, Bill Mussler, Project Manager, SUNCOAST TEAM SERVICES

You [Ryan] have been amazing throughout the process.  Appreciate your level of professionalism.” Thanks, Rhonda R. Williams, Project Manager, SUNCOAST TEAM SERVICES
