  • Household Products Harming Your Home’s Air Quality

    Energy Air

Some household products that purport to clean or freshen up homes have a significant, negative effect on indoor air quality. Decreased indoor air quality can lead to increased allergens, lingering odors, and a highly polluted indoor environment. Here are the top offenders that can harm your home’s air quality.

    1. Products with VOCs

Many wall paints, sealants, and caulks contain VOCs, also known as volatile organic compounds. The carbon based chemicals in VOCs are known to aggravate respiratory problems and allergies. Some people have even incurred kidney, liver, and nervous system damage after long-term exposure to VOCs. Fortunately, there are low and no-VOC paints available as alternatives.

    2. Artificial Home Fragrance

Air fresheners and candles composed of artificial fragrance oils and industrial ingredients may smell nice, but they typically mask odors rather than truly freshening the air in your home. Also, some people develop allergies to faux-scented products over time. Try candles and air fresheners made with natural essential oils, instead of those made with air quality harming chemicals, to keep your home smelling great.

    3. Chlorine Bleach

While it kills some bacteria, chlorine bleach is also toxic to humans and animals. Its fumes alone can cause dizziness and respiratory damage as the particles circulate through the air in your home. Bleach-free cleaning products clean effectively without putting your health in danger. Try a natural store bought cleaner or create your own all-purpose cleaning solution by mixing 3 parts vinegar, 1 part water, and 10 to 20 drops of essential oil such as lemon, rosemary, or orange.
