  • Why Is Water Dripping From My AC Vent?

Have you ever noticed your air conditioning vent leaking water? One of the most common AC concerns that people have with their air conditioning units is finding water dripping or streaking out from their ceiling AC vents. If you find water coming from your unit, don’t feel alarmed. There are many reasons why this can occur and most can be fixed with proper preventive AC maintenance. Here are a few of the most common reasons why your air vents may be leaking water.

    1. Clogged Drain Line

The drain line in your air conditioning unit can become clogged over time with dirt and debris, pushing the water back into the pan. When this pan becomes full, it can overflow through the air vents. Additionally, improperly installed drain lines can sometimes become disconnected. This will cause the water that is running through the drain line to spill out of the air vents. Re-attaching the drain lines, in addition to having them cleaned thoroughly, will prevent water from leaking.

    2. Low Refrigerant Charge

If your unit is low on refrigerant, it can cause your air handler to freeze while running. When the air conditioner shuts off, the ice will melt and result in your air vents leaking water. Unfortunately, ceilings can become ruined and result in costly repairs if this problem happens too often. Having the AC unit maintained properly will ensure your system never runs low on refrigerant.

    3. Dirty Air Filters

When the air can’t move freely through the filter due to dust and dirt, it will result in it freezing. Once it melts, the water will drip from the air vents, potentially damaging ceilings and walls as previously mentioned. You should change your air filters as indicated on the filter to prevent this from occurring.

    4. Condensation Due to Poor Insulation

When warm air comes into contact with cooler air, condensation occurs and results in the formation of water. Just like when placing an ice cold drink on a desk and water forms on the outside of the cup or glass, condensation can happen in your air conditioning unit too. When ductwork is not properly insulated, the air can become warm before leaving the vents, which will result in condensation and water leakage. If you don’t address this problem, the condensation can lead to rotted woodwork, ruined drywall, and mold.
