    Energy Air

While we’re all grateful for our air conditioning systems, our thermostats often don’t get the love they deserve. But without our thermostats, using our beloved ACs wouldn’t be so simple. After all, thermostats allow us to customize our home comfort by adjusting the temperature to our liking and beyond. However, a large percentage of homeowners aren’t using their thermostat properly, resulting in subpar comfort and increased energy bills. Read on to learn if you may be committing three of the most common thermostat mistakes.

    1. Setting Your Thermostat Too High or Too Low

When Florida’s climate nears 100 degrees, it can be tempting to set your thermostat to arctic temperatures — but doing so is one of the biggest thermostat mistakes you can make. Considering the temperature control setting on your thermostat is the key factor in determining your monthly energy usage, it’s a good idea to be cautious of making drastic temperature changes via the device. We recommend setting your thermostat at 78 degrees during the summer and 68 degrees during the winter (and not straying too far from these numbers), or else you risk putting your air conditioning system into overdrive and acquiring sky-high energy bills as a result.

    2. Not Maintaining Your Thermostat and HVAC System

Your air conditioning system is one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make for your home, so it’s important to maintain it on a regular basis if you want to keep it functioning for as long as possible. On top of ensuring all of the inner workings of your AC are in great shape, make sure you don’t forget about your thermostat! For good measure, we recommend having a comprehensive inspection and tuneup of your air conditioning system (thermostat included!) performed at least twice per year.

    3. Not Programming Your Thermostat

Do you have a programmable thermostat? If so, use it! There are far too many homeowners with intuitive thermostats who don’t take advantage of them. A programmable thermostat is extremely convenient as it can help lower your energy bills without affecting your comfort. Simply put, a programmable thermostat will allow you to program the temperature settings to fit your lifestyle, so you don’t have to worry about constantly adjusting it. Let’s say you work a job that causes you to be out of your home for the better part of the day; rather than leaving your air conditioner on all day wasting energy, you can use your programmable thermostat to automatically increase the temperature while you’re gone. Even better, you can program the thermostat to adjust to a more comfortable temperature a few minutes before you get home. This way, you’ll have saved energy and money all day but still get to return to a comfy oasis.
