  • Do I Need a Dehumidifier in Florida?

    Energy Air

Wondering if your central Florida home could use a dehumidifier to help with home comfort? Florida is a state that is well-known for high-humidity levels. Some homeowners will turn on their AC unit even during comfortable weather in an effort to keep humidity levels at bay inside the home. Others have invested in a home dehumidifier, which is a special appliance that is designed to remove moisture in the air so that humidity levels can lower to a more comfortable level. With one of these installed, you can turn off the HVAC system when you do not need it for temperature control knowing that the dehumidifier is controlling the humidity level in the building.

The Effects of Humidity On Your Home

Humidity is not an element that you want to contend with in your home, and this is because it can wreak havoc on a variety of surfaces. First, humidity or moisture can result in mold growth, and the last thing you want is to have an issue with mold or mildew throughout your home. Second, it can result in warping of wood as well as damage to electronics and other components. Altogether, moisture can be a damaging element, and high levels of humidity are unfortunately just as damaging in some cases as standing water from a flood.

What is the Recommended Humidity Level for my Home?

You may be wondering if you need to invest in a dehumidifier, and there is not a clear-cut answer to this question. Keep in mind that humidity levels can vary by the hour inside a home, so a smart idea is to invest in a humidity gauge. Keep in mind that some humidity is necessary for comfort and health, and excessively dry air can dry out the skin, mouth and more. Ideally, the humidity level in the home will be maintained around 40 to 50 percent, and you can use your gauge to determine how close or how high above this mark your home typically falls by looking at the gauge every day for a week or two.

    Make Your Own Dehumidifier:

According to DIY Natural you only need four supplies to make your own dehumidifier.

    Supplies:

    – Two 5-Gallon Buckets
    – Rock Salt
    – Hand Drill

    Directions:

Step 1. Take one of the 5-gallon buckets and drill a bunch of holes in the bottom of it. DIY Natural recommends six or seven holes and to make them 1/4 inch or so across.

Step 2. Place the bucket with the holes inside the other 5-gallon bucket.

Step 3. Place roughly five pounds of rock salt in the top bucket.

Step 4. Place your new dehumidifier in an area that you want to reduce moisture.

After a few days, there will be water in the bottom. Dump out the water and check it every few days. Eventually, you will have to replace the rock salt.
