Living in Florida, you rely on your air conditioner to keep you cool and comfortable almost year-round. But considering your air conditioner is a complex device, it will inevitably encounter problems from time to time. When it comes to keeping your home cool and comfortable, it’s important to know what to do when your air conditioner breaks down. Here are three of the most common problems air conditioners encounter and what you can do to fix them.
1. Your air conditioner isn’t turning on.
If your air conditioner isn’t turning on, the thermostat settings may have accidentally been adjusted or the system could have simply be switched into “OFF” mode. First, check your thermostat to ensure the batteries haven’t died and that the system settings have been adjusted. Next, set your thermostat to “COOL” and try lowering the temperature 5 to 10 degrees. If your home doesn’t begin to cool down, call your local HVAC professional.
2. Your air conditioner isn’t producing cold air.
If you notice that the air coming out of the vents is not as cold as usual, check the air filter first to make sure it isn’t dirty. If the air filter is dirty, it could be causing your air conditioner to produce less-than-cool air. Replacing the dirty air filter with a clean one can increase the efficiency of your air conditioner and ensure it produces cool air. Make sure that you change the air filter within your HVAC system once a month to keep your home cool and comfortable. If changing the air filter doesn’t remedy the problem, your HVAC system could be low on refrigerant. Handling refrigerant can be dangerous, so call your local HVAC professional for assistance.

3. Your air conditioner is leaking.
If your air conditioner is leaking near the condenser unit outdoors, then there is likely a clog in the condensate drain. If you’re comfortable checking for a clog yourself, open the front cover of the condenser unit and check to see if there is anything in the drain. Gently clean out the clog and it should restore proper airflow and stop water from leaking.
