Dehumidifier FAQs

Updated: Feb 10, 2023

Living in Florida, we’re no strangers to humidity. But humidity has no business being in your home. Aside from making your home less comfortable, too much humidity can promote moisture (aka mold, mildew, and bacteria). Luckily, a dehumidifier can help. If you’ve been considering investing in a dehumidifier, read on to learn some of the most frequently asked questions we get about this great investment.

1. What Does a Dehumidifier Do for Your Home?

– Fight moisture growth (mold, mildew, bacteria). – Prevent warped wood. – Protect electronics and other home components from damage. – Stave off dust mites. – Eliminate breathing and other health issues (itchy eyes, throat or skin). – Impede condensation on windows, walls or ceilings.

2. Recommended Humidity Level for Your Home

Measuring humidity is relative because everyone has their own unique comfort preferences. However, for most spaces, the ideal level of humidity is 45 to 50 percent. A humidity level below 30 percent can lead to an increase in cold and flu viruses, while a humidity level above 50 can create an environment where mold spore, bacteria, and harmful pests thrive.

3. When Do You Need a Dehumidifier?

Unfortunately, there is not a clear-cut answer to this question. However, if you are experiencing any or all of the effects listed above, then it might be time to start looking into dehumidifier options. Invest in a humidity gauge and keep in mind that humidity levels vary throughout the day. The ideal humidity level in a home should be around 40 to 50 percent. Remember that some humidity is a good thing as also keeps skin moisturized and lungs free from being too dry.

5. Where Should I Place my Dehumidifier?

Your dehumidifier needs to be placed appropriately for maximum results. Most homeowners place dehumidifiers in basements, laundry rooms, crawl spaces and indoor pool areas since these areas often have excess moisture. However, there are lots of different makes and models available to circumvent a variety of moisture issues that can be placed anywhere from single bedrooms to warehouses.
