First and foremost, an annual tune-up of your cooling system can help keep monthly utility costs down and help prevent larger and pricier repairs down the road. Simply put, the more efficiently your AC runs, the lower the energy costs, and the sooner that small concerns are found the less likely they can become bigger problems.
Why get a Spring Tune-up?
Putting off AC maintenance can ultimately shorten the life of your system. When your AC is running, the air circulating through can deposit airborne particles like dust, mold spores and more on its interior surfaces. Over time, these particles can accumulate, and if not addressed they can restrict airflow, reduce cooling ability and reduce the life of the system through corrosion and material breakdown.
What Maintenance Can I Do Myself?
Change your AC filters on a regular basis. Each home varies, but a good rule of thumb is a monthly replacement cycle. Avoid allowing filters to become clogged before you switch them out. Restricted airflow can cause your system to work harder than it should.
If you are a DIY’er, you can consider cleaning your AC drain line on an annual basis. A clogged drain line can cause your system to shut off in order to prevent an overflow of condensation. Be sure to read up prior to attempting or watch some how-to’s to see if this is a job you want to tackle.
What to Expect From a Spring Tune-up.
A standard AC maintenance appointment will usually last about an hour. In most cases, your technician will run the system in all of its modes to check that cooling temperatures are correct, the system is functioning correctly, and check for any signs of malfunction.
If you have either of our Gold or Platinum Annual Service Agreements, the technician has a set checklist to cover:
Cycle the complete system at the thermostat
Clean and replace owner supplied filters
Test and record system voltage and amperage
Test and record refrigerant pressure and temperature
Test and examine contactors, capacitors, elements and circuit boards
Examine Electrical Connections
Lubricate all moving parts as manufacturer requires
Clean and treat condensate drain with biodegradable treatment
Examine blower components
Test safety controls
Examine indoor coil
Examine outdoor coil
Our Platinum Plan goes even further. It includes the cleaning of both indoor and outdoor coils, cleaning the indoor air handler, cleaning the outdoor fan, and more.
